Corrections

We will get some things wrong.

We will get some things wrong. When we do, we correct them in public.

What we correct

A fact or a number that turns out to be wrong. A quote or an attribution we got wrong. A source that does not say what we said it says. A label that claimed more certainty than the evidence allowed.

Small typos we fix quietly. Anything that changes what a claim says goes in the log below.

What counts as a disagreement, not a correction

Our opinions are marked as opinions, and you are welcome to disagree with them. Tell us why. If the other side is stronger than we showed it, we will add it. That is an improvement, not a correction, and we are glad of it either way.

How we correct

  1. We check the claim again at its original source.
  2. We fix the story, and add a dated note at the top saying what was wrong and what changed. We don’t edit silently.
  3. We add the entry to the log on this page.
  4. If the mistake was in a film or a post, we say so where it appeared.

If a story makes a dated prediction, we will check it when the date arrives and say how it went, misses included.

The log

No corrections yet.

The notes inside each story that say “We got this wrong”, and the struck-through words in the text, show the making of the piece, before we published it. They are not corrections. Anything we change after publication will be listed here.
